Orkney Islands day tour

9am and our personal tour guide Jean collects us.
First stop was to see Churchill's Barriers, which were build in the second world war to stop submarine attacks in Scapa Flow a major british naval base. The action resulted from an attack by a german submarine killing 833 sailors. Try this link  (  Churchill's Barriers  )

Previously they relyed on purposely sunk steam ships which wasn't  sufficient.

As it says in the link the barriers were built by Italian POW's who in there spare time were able to build a little chapel from materials they could scrounge up.

On wards into the farming countryside and we see our favorite friends again, hairy coo's.

But wait, we have more new friends! Hairy pigs.

We pass through great countryside then call into Stromness, 2nd biggest villiage on the main island after Kirkwall.

Then we have a liquid lunch at Orkney Brewery. (Actually also had a great burger with it)

Onto Brough of Birsay, a small island where we can see the remains of an early Viking villiage. You can walk to the island at low tide.

More great scenery before getting home. Great day out with no driving by me.
